roaches
There are five common species of cockroaches in Arizona and having them around or in your home does not necessarily indicate a lack of cleanliness.
The five most common species of cockroaches have been common in Arizona for decades. While these roaches have some similarities, there are important differences that impact Blue Skys treatment approach. Many roaches enter the home from other areas and may not indicate a lack of cleanliness, though cleanliness can be a major factor in obtaining optimal control. The following is a list of these five common cockroaches. Click on the blue links if you would like to learn more about how we identify the different cockroaches and their specific size, color or harborage preferences.
Our service technicians are trained to correctly identify the different types of cockroaches to ensure that an effective treatment approach is taken.
Cockroach infestations require the proper know how to ensure that the populations reproduction cycle is broken. Identification is key since a proper ID will lead the technician to inspect the right places that cockroach type nests. There are instances when a service technician has a pest identification question in the field. The service managers at Blue Sky are some of the most respected in the state of Arizona allowing us to ensure that the proper identification is made and that an effective treatment approach is implemented while we are at your home.
What you can expect after we treat
The experience will vary depending on the type of cockroach we are tackling. For example, if an effective treatment approach is taken, it will take several months to break the reproductive cycle of a large german roach infestation. You will notice a decrease after the first treatment, but it takes several proper treatments to get german roaches under control. Many cockroach infestations will not take as long to control. Regardless of the time it takes to obtain control, we will let you know what to expect for your specific situation.

  • Color & Features: they are typically reddish brown in color and their wings cover their entire abdomen.
  • Harborage Preferences: commonly found in the sewers and have been nicknamed the sewer roach. They prefer other wet & cool environments. American cockroaches are very common outside and can enter structures from drains and perimeter areas.

  • Color & Features: dark brown to black and are typically solid in color. Both male and female have wings that do not cover entire body, but they do not fly.
  • Harborage Preferences: They prefer wet & cool environments and are cold tolerant. They can be found in sewers, basements, drains around pipes, and in wall voids.
Brown Banded Cockroach
  • Size: usually about inch long.
  • Color & Features: golden brown with two transverse or latitudinal bands across body and wings. nicknamed the furniture roach since they are often initially brought into the home from old furniture.
  • Harborage Preferences: They prefer dry & warm places and are more likely than the other roaches to be found throughout the home, often in high areas such as ceilings and picture frames. They are only found inside and it is a pest that is translocated to new dwellings. While most pest predominantly live and nest outside, these cockroaches are only found inside. It enters the home by being translocated from another source. For example, they come into the home from infested boxes brought from another location or they may also come from used furniture that was recently brought into the home.
German Cockroach
  • Size: usually about inch long.
  • Color & Features: pale brown with two dark longitudinal lines on their pronotum (covering on the top side of head and thorax area).
  • Harborage Preferences: They will be found indoors around wet and warm areas. Cracks and crevices in kitchens and bathrooms are the most common harborage areas with the water and warmth often provide by running appliances. Similar to the brown banded cockroach, german roaches are also translocated to new dwellings. They can be brought home in boxes, used appliance or electronics, bags and electrical equipment.
  • Reproductive capability: german roaches reproduce quicker than all the other roaches common to Arizona. Monthly service is recommended or it will be difficult to impossible to gain optimal control.
Turkestan Cockroach
  • Size: Males are approximately 3/4 inch long. Females are 3/4 to 1 inch long.
  • Color & Features: Males are typically reddish brown to golden brown in color with wings that extend past the edge of their abodmen. The edges of their wings are lighter in color than their body becoming nearly translucent at the base. Males are often misidentified as an american cockroach. Females are also reddish brown to golden brown in color but their wings are smaller, triangular in shape and do not cover their abdomen. Females are most likely to be misidentified as an oriental cockroach.
  • Harborage Preferences: Since it's introduction into the U.S. in the 1970's, this species of cockroach has migrated to arid regions such as Arizona. According to D.H. Gouge of the University of Arizona, the Turkestan cockroach has become the number one cockroach type pest in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Turkestan roach is mainly an outdoor species but if found inside it is most likely a male because of their strong attraction to light at night.
